Congress Patron: Sir Gus Nossal
Sir Gus, who was born in Austria, is among the migrants who have made the greatest contribution to Australian life. He and Sir Arvi Parbo, from Estonia, along with Gab Kovacs, from Hungary arrived here unable to speak English.
Sir Gus first won an OBE in 1970, and was knighted seven years later. He has an Order of Australia, a Centenary Medal, an Anzaas Medal and is a recognised living treasure.
Perhaps his greatest moment was receiving the Albert Einstein World Award for Science, given to researchers who “have brought true benefit and wellbeing to mankind”. He has done all this with his groundbreaking work in immunology as director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research and professor of medical biology at Melbourne University. He is the most decorated Australian scientist.
A word from our patron:
"It gives me great pleasure to be the Patron of this Congress which I believe is a very worthy and timely endeavour. The worlds of sustainability and health have developed almost independently of one another, despite the best intentions of each to address issues of common concern. It is time to reunite them in the interests of our quality of life. In a symbiotic way the value and management of parks will need to address broader community wellbeing, just as public health and social cohesion need to better consider the value of contact with nature in their activities. This Congress should provide a wonderful forum to active such outcomes. I look forward to participating." Sir Gustav Nossal.
